OPPO is on full HATE MODE! lately. I'll see ya'll in a month or so. We all have the right to dislike any cars. I support this actually. But too much hate and bashing is making OPPO seem like the Youtube comment section on an American VS Import video. I truly can't defend the everyday car on my own. I thought I could but I failed. Automotive stereotypes and propaganda are below the intelligence and heart of OPPO. I like the peace, open mindedness, and good times yo :] Drive Free or Die!
I will not respond to anything posted below. I won't fully leave the kinjaverse tho. I'm going to stay planted in my LaLD for the time being. It is my awesome and accepting place full of tanlented peeps and friendship. It was literally built on trust.
If you are in the Houston area and want to swing by my job and see some cool cars, email me at ulysses[at]starmotorcars.com or catch me on LaLD. Hopefully I won't be too busy repairing your fancy enthusiast cars after their owners do all the same things ya'll rag on Camry, Corolla, and all ecoboxes about. Blame ze humanz, not ze auto. The car world is full of examples and contradictions. Why hate? Let's just get along.
It be no rant ya'll, you know I think every single OPPOnaut is ultra awesome :] You peeps are so kickass. I proudly wear my OPPO t-shirts to all local car events. But all this bashing and hate is not the OPPO I fell in love with. At least at the level it has been lately.
Ahuevo! La pura neta cabrones.

I think that he is upset by all of the Camry bashing, which is uncalled for. Although many do find them to be the anti-enthusiast's car, they are often times a good enough fit for those who choose to drive them.
Heck, I consider myself to be a car enthusiast, yet I don't know how to drive a manual, don't mind the Prius or Camry, and drive a Bloated station wagon with a CVT.

From what I can remember, EL_ULY takes a position of "let's not fight, we're all car guys", so he's usually defending the stanced cars, donks, etc. and has been doing so for a while now.
I think the earlier Camry driving post may have struck a nerve, as it can be construed as a smug put-down of Camry drivers.

I'm sorry Uly, but leaving because people are bashing on a beigemobiles is a pretty sad reason.
You said it yourself, everyone is going to hate on different cars. So let them hate. What they don't understand is that those very same beigemobiles are what paid for the funding for their Miatas and GT86s.
If I would have let all the hating on GM cars becuse of the recalls get to me, I wouldve left a long time ago. But instead I kept fighting, and mostly ignoring, the haters. It's just what you gotta do.
(Between you and me, I had a blast throwing around my girlfriends '98 Camry V6.)

But the stereotype is mostly true, though. At the rental car agency I work for, we actually get people that request the Camry, specifically. These are some of the most boring people on the face of the planet. Like, listens to NPR exclusively boring. I'm not talking about the "Prairie Home Companion" or "Wait, Wait, Don't Tell Me" listeners, either. Those shows are just too exciting. We're talking about the people who tune into NPR specifically for the classical music. That kind of boring.
I'm not talking about the fun Camrys and Corollas from the '80s and '90s, though. I'm talking about the ones from the past few years. The ones you can't even get with a manual transmission. I drove an early '90s Camry once several years ago. It was a loaner car from the shop where I was getting my car serviced. It was such a blast that it convinced me to ditch the shitty base model Neon that I was driving (or not driving as it was getting the transmission replaced. Again.) and get something fun.
The current ones have had all the fun beaten out of them. Even the "grounded to the ground" trim packages with the rims and the sleekness of the body try to punish you for attempting to use the "paddle shifters" for fun. It's a boring car for boring people. Not the kind of people who even know what opposite lock is, let alone would post to a community blog that uses that as its name.

I'm sorry! I took a three or four month break from Oppo this summer for the same reasons. LaLD has always been much more positive, but my budget can't justify diecast purchases anymore. :,( I'm glad I'm a musician, but it also sucks.

Classical music means boring? You need some neuroscience, specifically #2.

I'm not commenting on your car judgement - just your judgement's of what other people like and the fact that it may have more to do with functioning at efficiency than you realize.

As tu hermano, I demand a response to the following from you, Uly.
Maybe it's my fiery Latin blood, maybe it's because sobriety has turned me into an ornery bastard, but I'm glad there's a bit of hate on Oppo as of late. The whole "everyone is a special snowflake" shit was getting straight STALE. Hell, I've stayed away from Oppo lately because it was beginning to bore me. But the hate is good. Keeps things lively. Keeps people talking.
It's all on how you take it though. For example, most of my negativity is done in a "busting balls" or a "let's start an argument to keep things interesting" sort of way.
But hey man, it ain't for everyone.

Just about all I listen to is NPR, usually news. I hate normal talk shows, ads and top 40 crap music. But I'm not the type to choose a Camry; I do however have tattoos, enjoy mosh pits, have weak knees from shenanigans in my younger days (I'm not even 30), snowboard. Don't knock NPR, or anything really, music/listening choices are even more diverse than transportation choices these days.

I don't mind the hate so much. Its the "If your not racing or driving a ( insert old slow German car or little Japanese car) then your an idiot." That gets under my skin.

I autocrossed the shit out of my 4-banger 2001 Camry 5-speed. And then the next day I could get 33 MPG going out of town, in relative comfort, with tons of shit in the back.
In fact I miss it so much I'm trying to sell my MAZDA 6 V6 and get it fixed.
Fuck all the haters.

Problem is, the camry and carolla aren't all that great as beigemobiles either. I know, because my family has a 2009 V6 camry.
I will give it one, and only one piece of praise: for what it is, it is fairly quick and has a fair amount of horsepower.
From there, I think the camry hate is totally justified. The interior is junk, especially for the price. Things begin falling apart after a couple years only in there. The transmission is the worst thing on earth (can you say unintended acceleration?). Not only that, but every time the car starts in the morning it lunges the fuck forward and you have to be very careful. The thing also never knows what damn gear to be in.
I could go on. I have a lot of experience driving and sitting in the car.
One of the worst offenses, though, is the Toyota fake "innovation" which bugs me. Slap a new face on a car and call it "all new!". They live off of their old 90's glory, and most clueless buyers simply look for the Toyota badge instead of looking for the best choice. It's similar to people who hate Apple products in that regard. They are a rip off.
If you've ever spent a lot of time in a modern Toyota, I can't imagine you'd be too fond of them.

Rented many a Prius when I've needed transport, to pick something up - perfectly acceptable little cars. Steering responsive enough, brakes good, room in the boot for ... things. Had an '88 Camry wagon 5-speed (not brown, gray) which was pretty Jalop.

Some people are always going to rag on the camry and rag on the Toyota, and as a site that attracts car enthusiasts, that contingent is never going to be lower than an non-trivial portion of the group. So what? Why let those people define your place in this community. They aren't going away for a month - why do you have to?
